Our organizational goals are to:
- Empower youth to lead healthy and productive lives. Bike Works operates primarily in underserved neighborhoods in southeast Seattle that lack easily accessible community programs and safe public spaces. Through time-intensive after-school mentoring programs and innovative riding opportunities, Bike Works reaches youth who are not usually attracted to traditional enrichment activities, and helps them realize their own self-worth in a community that will support, encourage, and strengthen them. Our programs introduce youth to the joy and freedom of bicycle riding, and provide opportunities for them to get out and explore their world by bicycle. In our classroom and out in the field our youth participants build confidence, critical thinking skills, self esteem, and life skills. They also learn what it means to give back to their community – through logging community service hours they earn their own bicycle and also discover they have valuable skills to offer others in need.
- Make bicycling accessible and affordable to people from all walks of life. Bike Works operates a series of community programs and a nonprofit community bike shop which are designed to meet this goal. Our bike shop sells affordable recycled bicycles to the greater Seattle community while generating revenue to run our youth programs, and helps further our mission to get more people riding bikes. With the thousands of hours of volunteer help from our youth mechanics and community members, Bike Works also donates recycled bicycles to community-based organizations that serve homeless and disadvantaged populations. We also donate bicycles to villages in Ghana and El Salvador in partnership with the Village Bicycle Project.
- Promote sustainable transportation and environmental stewardship. We view each and every bicycle donated, refurbished, and recycled back into the community as one less bike in the landfill, and hopefully one less car on the road. Our youth programs encourage bicycling as an alternative and fun means of transportation, and as an exciting way to explore the world while being good stewards to our natural environment.
